First, I would like to say thank you to Ride Backwards for the privilege of shooting for them.

A little about about myself;  I’m a volunteer firefighter in two departments: Shrewsbury Hose Co. #1 and South Old Bridge #2.  I also did 4 years on heavy Rescue and 9 years as an EMT. I live in New Jersey where I’m trying to get my photography business up and running; I’ve been shooting seriously for the last 15 years.

I have been shooting FFCC in Europe, getting to meet a lot of great people and hoping this year to meet a lot more. Seeing that I’m the Ride Backwards photographer, all Team RB members will be given priority to their runs.

Looking forward to getting some great photo’s this year. See ya at the toughest all day event-- being the camera guy at an FFCC.

Thanks again RB!

Mo headed overseas after graduating from Elon University & played basketball professionally for six years. After retiring from basketball, he joined the fire service and is 5 yrs in as a firefighter with Farmers Branch, TX.

2012 will be Mo's third season in the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge. 2011 was a great year as he welcomed his first child (a daughter) and set a new PR of 1:50, dropping almost 13 seconds off his previous best. Mo is looking to improve on that this coming year and once again have a positive season.

"The end goal right now is obviously to go Lions Den, it will take a lot of work but I'm looking forward to the fight. I am blessed and truly proud to be associated with Ride Backwards!"

With some serious training, Chris won the National title in October of that year with a time of 1:56. Since 2011, he has had the Combat Challenge bug, with two World Challenge events under his belt, and also First Place Tandem & Relay - New Zealand titles.

Andrew is a career firefighter in Northeast Tennessee, and has been in the fire service for 8 years. He is a native of Southwest Virginia and relocated to Kingsport, Tennessee in early 2008 to start his career with the Kingsport Fire Department.

Currently assigned to Station 1 and on the Department’s Technical Rescue Team, he takes pride in every aspect of the profession. In his spare time, he runs a fire service blog called The “Model City” Firefighter. The blog provides Catron with an avenue to write about topics that interest him, including physical fitness.

Catron is a proud member of the IAFF, and serves as an Executive Board Member for Local 2270. Andrew also has also traveled to New York City to assist with Hurricane Sandy Relief with Task Force 17 out of the Charlotte, NC area. He also sits on the Advisory Board for the National Firefighters Endowment, an organization that provides grants and equipment for departments in need.

While personal fitness is something that Catron has struggled with in the past, he has pushed himself to loose nearly 50 lbs. He enjoys working out on and off the job. He climbs in multiple 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs each year to help raise money for the National Fallen Firefighter’s Foundation and to honor those who were killed on 09/11/01. Melanie was a firefighter/EMT in the DC Metro area for nine years before relocating to Lewisville, Texas in 2010 to finish her MS in Emergency Management.

She has been a lifelong athlete, playing highly-competitive sports in college and for several years after graduating, as well as competing in several triathlons over the past few years.

After struggling through a life-threatening illness and several serious knee injuries, Melanie recovered fully and took up the fast-paced sport of 3-gun action shooting (using pistol, rifle and shotgun) in late 2010 and has competed in several matches over the past 18 months, consistently placing in the top 3 of her division.

Hi all, I'm Ross DeFalle; I'm 28 years old and from Pittsburgh, PA. I run obstacle course races. My story differs from the rest of the incredible athletes on Team Ride Backwards. I am not a fire fighter, I help put together fitness programs for the Economy Volunteer Fire Department, Station 69, in Economy, PA, a small town outside of Pittsburgh.
At the end of 2011, I was in a horrible place. I threw away friendships, I was selfish, and it pained me to look at myself in the mirror. Through the next 9 or 10 months, I was lost. I finally snapped out of my funk when a friend from Station 69 asked me to help draw up a fitness program with him for some of the members at the department. I mention that story to mention this: when you're lost and down, find your passion and hang on tight. I rebuilt my body and mind through fitness.

Before 2013, I had never run an obstacle course race; in 2013, I was fortunate enough to compete in The Tough Mudder World Championships, the Spartan Death Race, and I was lucky enough to earn my Spartan Race Trifecta. I also completed my first triathlon in Honolulu, HI. From these races, I realized that life is a lot like fitness; I am nowhere near the type of person I can be, nor is my fitness level where it can be, but there is room to grow, and if you aren't waking up each day ready to grow, it's time to reevaluate.

In 2014, I am anxious to represent Ride Backwards at The Death Race, World's Toughest Mudder, and other numerous races across this great country. I am also going global this year, I will be Running With The Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. I also hope to earn a Crossfit Level 1 certification and personal training and nutrition certifications.
If I can leave the Ride Backwards community with anything it would be this: live for monumental moments, don't let them slip through the cracks, and never be afraid to rise after you fall.

I graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC with a degree in Economics, where I also played baseball. In 2012, I graduated with my MBA with a concentration in Marketing from Arizona State. I also enjoy traveling, surfing, sky diving, and scuba diving.

Thanks for reading, have a great 2014, all!

I work as a Driver Operator for Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

I have been an AE for close to 4 years now, and have been employed with Palm Beach County Fire Rescue for 7 years-9 months.

I participate in 5ks, 10ks, and CrossFit, and will hopefully compete in a great Firefighter Combat Challenge season this year. I enjoy staying active when I'm not working a ton of hours, and I look forward to a more active and successful season in 2014.

Irena Elmstrom is a paramedic/firefighter at Boca Raton Fire Rescue.

Irena is also a CrossFit Level 1 certified trainer and Olympic lifting trainer and is involved in many South Florida events, whether as an athlete or judge.
Irena is looking forward to 2014 season with her long time FFCC tandem partner David Bowman.

John Harvey moved to Chicago in 2010 after graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University where he played rugby at the collegiate, all-state, and men’s elite level.  Once in Chicago John explored multiple areas of fitness and competition, competing in the 2010 Chicago Urbanathlon, the 2011 Midwest Jiu Jitsu Championship, the Wisconsin Tough Mudder, Amateur Strongman in the 205 lb. weight class, and competing in multiple CrossFit competitions with his wife and fellow coach Sarah; all while coaching and training at Lincoln Park CrossFit and Edgewater CrossFit.

“My wife, Sarah, and I have dedicated our lives and careers to fitness and competition training.  We love coaching CrossFit not only because it is our own passion and we are fierce competitors, but because we love educating as many people as possible on the  lifelong benefits of being strong and fit.  Aiden, our 8 year old son (my stepson) is studying Jiu Jitsu and learning the family business; being strong and healthy. My wife and stepson are my biggest source of strength.  We love to go out and have fun with friends, but we really love getting into the CrossFit gym and slamming barbells with friends!”

“I am proud to wear and live the RB brand.  Every day I work to Kill My Ego and Build My Pride.  It is an honor to be one of the first non-firefighter athletes to be sponsored by RB alongside American heroes.”

Sarah was an All-American with the American Dance Association, and competed in a powerlifting competition in High School where she took first place.

Sarah began competing in Figure competitions in 2011 with the highlight being taking 7th in International Amateur Figure at the ultra-competitive Arnold Classic in 2012.

Sarah began training in CrossFit in late 2012 with her husband John Harvey and right away discovered a new passion.

Since then she became a certified CrossFit instructor and Coach at Edgewater CrossFit and Lincoln Park CrossFit in Chicago. Sarah has competed in several CrossFit competitions and is working toward her goal of being a competitor in the CrossFit Games North Central Regional, and eventually a CrossFit Games competitor.

She has been serving the citizens of Madison as a Firefighter for over 10 years.  In addition to being an AE, Sue served as a Training Officer for the Madison Fire Department and is looking forward to her third consecutive recruit academy.  According to Sue, it's a wonderful way to give back to the MFD and to inspire the newest members of the department.
